Week 7 (June 22 - June 28)
22 June 2003
I will include June 21st in this write-up. The day started off early (5:00am). We have everything ready in order to get on the road by 6:30. Len showed up and we were off to Stangbang '03!!
Even at 8:00 the temperature was HOT! Wow! We started setting up our booth and getting the cars prepped. Admiral (Mike) was having battery issues with AI#16 (more on that later).
Setting up the scales
CMC#17 was ready to go! My only concern were the brakes and the front tires (old Auto-X tires). Once I got the car tech'd I went ahead and made my way to the line for some time trials.
First run: Not a bad pass at all. I took it easy to make sure nothing fell off the car. The brakes were really scaring me though. The pedal would go immediately to the floor and that in turn would lock up the front brakes. Not to worry though, I took it as something I need to "fix" and continued running. It would also push really bad in the tight turns. I knew the front tires were wasted, so I switched the fronts to the back and backs to the front.
Second run: It would hook during the first part of the turn, then the rear would slide out (tires) and I would have to steer it with the throttle. Not real predictable to say the least and my lap time was less than stellar.
I didn't get a chance to make another pass during the racing session (the one counted). Since I knew the rear tires were wasted, I decided to have them go out with a bang and entered the burn out contest. Lots of smoke and a huge mound of rubber were all that was left of the tires. I blew both of them up...er..down. =)
Ok, with the generous offer from Todd C. to let me borrow a used set of racing tires, I was back on the track for some time trials. After two passes, I shaved almost four seconds off my previous best. (Best - 54.1sec). Not bad with all things considered. I was really pleased with the performance of CMC#17!!! It ran like a champ! Never got above 185* water temperature (even when hot lapping it). I'm very happy and with a little tweaking this car will be ready for the CMC race in August!
Wooohooo!!!
More to follow....it's late.....
23 June 2003
The linear rate springs have arrived!! Time to get busy and get them installed and tuned. I can now return some of the donor parts back to the 88GT to get it back on the road. =)
What? I know that's not much to report, but I'm taking a few days off from working in the 90* garage. I know I know... I need to dial 1-800-WAA-AAAA.
I will be back at it later this week. I have to go write a 4 page essay on Operating Systems. L8TR.
24 ==> 30 June 2003
I'm going to be taking a break before continuing the CMC17 build. Please check back next week as the saga continues.
